About the course

This course is designed for new managers and for longer serving managers who feel the need of some support, with the difficulties that can (and do) surround the job. It is intended to be intense and highly participatory. It will include all original work.

 

Course Content

  • Why am I a manager: what kind of manager am I?
  • Staff supervision: What it is and isn't about
  • Boundaries between manager and staff (including do you socialise?)
  • Disciplining staff - What it can really be like, and is it worth it?
  • 3 scenarios based on real issues with staff
  • The goodwill factor - how to get it, how to keep it, and how much its worth.
  • Evaluation

 

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course participants will have:

  • a clearer understanding of the role of the manager
  • increased their awareness of the interactions that can occur between manager and staff
  • looked at where and why boundaries exist
  • discussed tried and workable methods to smooth manager/staff interaction
  • looked at ongoing strategies for good working practice
  • examined the pitfalls of the disciplinary process

 

The day will focus around question and answer sessions, case study analysis and information exchange, and will be highly participative and informal allowing participants to maximise the time spent together.

Description

Jo has many years experience of working with vulnerable people. She has worked for the past 22 years, in social work, community work and the supported housing arena. Jo has worked for several national organisations, as well as small and local voluntary agencies and Local Authorities. Her experience covers a variety of roles, including management and development and service provision along with experience of a broad range of client groups, including young homeless people, people with mental health problems, people with drug and alcohol problems, older people, offenders and refugees/asylum seekers. She has extensive experience of working with the SP Programme and currently works for Wakefield MDC assisting them to progress with the National Personalisation agenda for Adult Social Care Services.
