About the course
This course is aimed at all those with responsibility for staff training and development, for example supervisors and managers , particularly those early in their management career. It would also be useful for those considering applying for a first management to aid their own career development. It’s starting point is that there are development opportunities at every stage of an individual’s carer with an organisation. It uses a variety of teaching methods including small group work to enable the participants to broaden their skills and knowledge.

- A five stage model of an individuals career with an organisation
- The Developmental Opportunities in each stage
- The Learning Organisation
- The role of the manager
- Conducting a Training Needs Analysis
- Work based training opportunities
- External training opportunities
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course participants will :
- Be aware of the five stage model
- Have considered the learning opportunities at each stage
- Have examined the concept of the Learning Organisation
- Be aware of the role of the manager , especially in conducting training needs analysis
- Have considered work based and external training opportunities.

Guy Smith has fifteen years experience in the field of social care. He has worked with a variety of client groups including the under-fives, young people and their families, the elderly and those in mental distress, both in the statutory and voluntary sectors. Within supported housing he has worked on Floating Support Schemes, in Hostels and in projects with hostels, group homes and single tenancies. Originally a Community Worker he is a qualified Social Worker and counsellor.
