Course Description:

About the course

This course aims to help participants to help women to get the best deal from the benefits system in various situations of housing stress. Using a rights-based approach, the course will explore steps to maximise support and anticipate difficulties for women pursuing claims. We will refer to the law and guidance to see where it can be used in women's interests.

 

Course Content

  • entitlements, claiming procedures and requirements for women when single or in relationships, with children or without
  • the role of the Benefits Agency, the Child Support Agency, Housing Benefit Offices and other bodies affecting claims and payments - including how to deal with or challenge them
  • entitlements, particularly to Housing Benefit and the Social Fund, following relationship breakdown, in refuges or temporary housing, and after further housing moves or returning home
  • benefit rules for younger women, care leavers, women working or studying, and women from abroad
  • the role of the New Deals and the 'ONE' Programme of work-focussed interviews
  • evaluation


Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course participants will:

  • list the main steps to take for women to establish successful claims to Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Housing Benefit and Working Families Tax Credit
  • list barriers to entitlement presented by the main Benefit Authorities and a tactic to challenge each of these
  • describe how to approach key provisions of Housing Benefit and the Social Fund to help with housing moves, particularly after relationship breakdown
  • note benefit issues for particular groups of women, as well as new opportunities and obligations

About the Trainer:

Jean  works as a Welfare Rights officer, specialising in policy and publicity work, for a local authority advice service in Manchester.   She is an experienced trainer on Welfare Benefits and access to entitlements.
